Session 8- 5/19/2010

Warren ran from last week's cliffhanger to find the rest of the party who had been variously occupied with other engagements. Lucius and Cwthwn came running. Lucius, as it turns out, was perfect for the task and quickly saved his friends from the Howling Pillars using the magic of his music (150xp- Lucius). It then fell to the party to place the objects they had collected on a series of runic circles in the floor and see what would happen.

As the objects hit the floor all of the doors in the complex banged open and a series of traps were engaged. Bronx found himself being attacked by a pool of elemental water, Lucius and K'hash were attacked by roaring statues, Ralmandu had to deal with grasping undead and Warren and Cwthwn were treated to a futile clicking from the crossbow traps they had disarmed hours earlier. The doom sphere, of which they had been warned earlier, was also activated. It rolled around the inner track of the complex making getting around more difficult than one might like. The real treat though was the appearance of the guardian of the complex, a young green dragon.

All in all, it was nothing they couldn't handle. The traps were little more than a nuisance to such hardened warriors and the dragon they worried so much about was slain in one stroke by Ralmandu as the party contemplated entering the inner sanctum (proving grounds- 2700xp).

The inner sanctum proved difficult to enter. By the time the party was ready to enter the hall was clogged with the rush of demons trying desperately to get at them. three evistro carnage demons, a Barlgura and a giant skeletal minotaur were falling over themselves for a piece of the adventurers. meanwhile, in the chamber beyond, their master, Maldrick Scarmaker, was nearing completion on his great ritual. The two slaves he had ensorcelled stood waiting in a circle of runes for their horrible fate.

The battle was mighty and tested them all. As the demon onslaught continued with little remittance things began to look rather dire for the heroes. Their injuries were beginning to slow them down and the demons seemed unfazed. Try though they may the party had to watch one slave disappear in a jet of fire, consumed by the ritual. Soon thereafter the party found their reserves of energy, marshaled themselves and pressed forward slaying the demons and making relatively short work of Malrick once he was unprotected by his minions (2100 xp).

The plot was foiled and the day won. Malrick lived a spartan lifestyle aside from slaves and minions so the party was forced to be happy with a job well done, a day saved and some minor magic items. The most interesting thing on Malrick's person was a silver key which gave Ralmandu a rather cinematic vision of a secret passage off of the seven pillared hall which would take them to a "tower of mysteries". Now, with some incriminating notes about Paldemar in hand, the party sets its sights on the seven pillared hall where they hope to make sense of all they have learned.

+2 elven cloak
silver key
correspondence between Maldrick and Paldemar
Sense of accomplishment

XP Gained:
Cwthwn, Ralmandu, Warren, K'hash and Bronx- 800

Sessions 4-7 with apologies

Session 4- 4/21/2010

When we left our heroes they were about to lay their heroic brows to heroic rest. Sadly, so near to the "Well of Demons" rest is hard to come by. Their rest was interrupted by Abyssal incursion. The party was awoken first by a cry of rage and anguish from a spectral Minotaur which then vanished. Unnerved by this apparition the party laid down to rest once more. This time they were woken by a warping of the fabric of reality. Warren, being the only one truly unnerved by this attack needed more rest and as no one else felt they had rested enough the party did so. Again their sleep was interrupted. A Quasit appeared to the party and offered them information if they would pay him either in money or sacrifice. He holds no love for Baphomet or Yeenoghu and serves as official emissary from the court of Demogorgon. In exchange for 100gp the Demon answered three questions.
1- Where are the items we need for this test? -They are to the Southeast of us, the south of us and there are two to the south west of us.
2- What can you tell us about Paldemar? -Paldemar is a member of the Mages of Saarun but he does not serve them alone. He also seeks the secrets of Vecna.
3- Where are the slaves? -The nearest slaves are to the Southeast but there are many more in the labyrinth.

Suitably annoyed by all of the interruptions the party broke camp and, after some investigation, decided to go back into the well in an attempt to save the slaves. Upon entering the antechamber they were beset by another ghostly minotaur who chastised Bronx ad X'abra asking what they were doing leading these people here and that they should know better. He then banished them to a tiny room with no doors where they fought a Basilisk and found a new friend, Samael, who joined the party.

Pressing forward the party then moved into a small hallway running east west and encountered the ghosts of three adventurers who offered them information if they could prove themselves honest, powerful and worthy of the knowledge. Being eventually convinced the ghosts informed the party that they would need four items, a mask, bell, book and knife. and the items will need to be placed on a series of runic circles in the complex at precisely the same moment. To the east of the proving grounds, where they then stood, was the inner sanctum which is where they would be able to go if they completed the test. The items cannot be removed from the well and return to their previous locations after being used. Once the ceremony has been completed it will wake the guardian, a green dragon, and activate a number of traps which will need to be overcome. Each of the chambers in the complex has a trap within which is designed to make the task difficult the fastest way to move around is the center track but there is a trap there as well, a crushing ball of magic force which travels around it. There is a treasure hidden in the complex it is to the south.

The convenient unloading of hints and plot hooks being dispensed of the party then moved on to their first room. In the room were two statues of minotaur which were magically possessed by demons to swing whips around and make life difficult. There were also two pools of poisonous magic blood in the way of getting to a blade and hilt on pedestals on the far side of the room. To make matters worse there were also a few demons swimming about in the pools of blood. Luckily the party is fairly agile and managed to jump about and destroy the statues without any permanent deaths. Samael made himself immediately useful and summoned an angel which snagged the blade pieces for them while they held off the demons and statues.

4E Interlude Adventure: Kobold King Session 3

4E Interlude Adventure: Kobold King Session 3
Session 3: April 7, 2010

Flush with victory, the party pressed onward. Successfully navigating the forest environment, they found themselves at the site of an ancient ruin, now the home of the Kobold King they sought.

Outside the ruins they encountered a Kobold guard wearing a desiccated tongue on a thong around his neck. Through a series of clever signs and hops, Wisseau communicated to his compatriots that this was the Kobold who had, years before, attacked and killed his family, and cut out his tongue. Making a heartfelt plea for vengeance, Wisseau attacked, with the aid of his companions, and they slew the Kobold. Wisseau completed his vengeance by cutting out the Kobold's tongue.

Inside the ruins, the party found that the guards were engaged in a game of Skull-Skull, and having too much fun to be actually keeping guard. Their attack on the guards was successful, and they continued on their way, in search of the king.

Successfully avoiding a dart trap, the party arrived at last at the inner stronghold of the Kobold King, where he was secreted, making his final stand. A boulder trap delayed their progress, but at length the king and his guards were no match for our party of heroes, and victory was theirs. A search of the bodies and the room revealed the talisman they had been asked to bring back as proof of the king's defeat, as well as a store of treasure (see below). The talisman was discovered to be a valuable gem inscribed with the symbol of Tiamat, granting protection to her worshipers; a closer inspection into its arcane properties revealed that it had been cursed with the king's dying breath.

Reveling in their victory, and looking forward to a long rest to recover and heal their wounds, the party was debating whether to simply return the talisman to Winterhaven, and let them worry about the curse, or to press onwards from there to Thunderspire in hopes of selling it for a higher price. As they debated, a green dragon arrived, demanding to know who had killed her servants (the Kobolds). Disgusted with her inferior servants (for allowing themselves to be so easily killed), she set about devouring the Kobolds, giving the party ample time to make their escape and return to Winterhaven.

More kobolds and more adventures await.

Talisman of Tiamat

Session 3 4/14/2010

Moving farther into the complex of the Bloodreaver's hideout the party moved into what must have been the Chamber of Eyes itself. There they found that what had once been a small temple had been converted into a holding pen for slaves. Chains littered the floor and a goblin was oiling them with his loyal dire wolf guard. Unfortunately, the party seems to be one step behind the slavers as the slaves have already been taken elsewhere. A battle broke out and the goblin was joined by two of his friends. After clearing the room things became more complicated as the Leader of the Bloodreavers, Krand, mustered his lieutenant and the customers who were present, a pair of Duergar.

A search of the area revealed that the slaves had been sold to Clan Grimmerzhul who the party knew to maintain a presence in the Seven Pillared Hall. Also that invading slavers' nests can be profitable. (270 xp, loot below.)

On the way out the party stumbled upon a trapdoor which led to a room full of carousing slavers. Swords flashed, arrows flew and in a cinematic sequence worthy of the Wachowski bros. the slavers were dispatched. (190 xp)

Sadly, the party was now deep within a labyrinth and without a guide. After hours of fruitless wandering through the trackless passages they finally came upon an occupied chamber. The wight in the back corner seemed none too pleased to see them but the real problem was the Phalagar and pair of Cavern Chokers. They objected much more violently. Happily, the party was victorious and decided to rest before adventuring any further. (262 xp)

+2 delver's chainmail
2 potions of healing

4E Interlude Adventure: Kobold King Session 2

Session 2: March 31, 2010

After surviving encounters with wild creatures and vermin, the party continued on their way, still seeking any sign of the kobold raiders. As they paused for a brief rest, they heard sounds of a struggle ahead. Cautiously investigating, they came upon two kobold guards recapturing an escaping prisoner. Making short work of the guards, the Party completed the rescue of the bard Slaptyback Fishtybum, who had been captured and was intended as a gift for the kobold king. The kobolds had no idea what a bard was, but they knew that a king was supposed to have one.

Having escaped from the raiders' camp, the bard was able to lead the party there. After cautiously making their way past a ring of Doomspore, the party was face with a guard drake and several kobolds, including a wyrmpriest who attacked them not only with an orb of poison, but with a conjured onyx dog. Fighting valiantly, they destroyed the raiders, and discovered their hidden stash of treasure. (800 XP) (see Loot, below)

Pressing onward, they went in search of the kobold stronghold, determined to stop the kobold king once and for all. They deftly avoided being caught in the snare trap set by the raiders. They were not so fortunate, however, when they encountered a clearing filled with huge webbing, and were forced to fight three giant spiders. Though they were repeatedly hit with the sticky webbing and restrained for a time, most of the spiders' bite attacks were unsuccessful, and the party once again prevailed against their foes. (600 XP)

Now the party must find, and face, this reported Kobold King in his stronghold.

Loot:
1 Onyx Dog figurine
1 Healing Potion
4 Vials of Poison
1 Bag of Holding
500 GP

Each member of the party earned 280 XP

4E Interlude Adventure: Kobold King Session 1

Session 1: March 24, 2010

Late in the evening, a group of hardy, though tardy, adventurers
found their way to the Copper Kettle in Winterhaven. Eager for
adventure, not to mention easy money, they entered with hope in their
hearts and the advertisement in their hands, only to find, to their
dismay, that the position had been filled by an earlier band of
adventurers, who had already departed for the Thunderspire Mountain.
There was no one remaining in the Copper Kettle, apart from the barman
and the barmaid, other than a rather grumpy dwarf named Drugo.

Drugo, known (mostly to himself) as Kobold-Killer, presented them with
an alternative adventure—to seek out and destroy the upstart Kobold
Kingdom in the Winterbole forest. Valthrun the Wizard arrived to add
his voice to persuade them to take up this quest, and shortly they
agreed to start out first thing in the morning with Drugo.

In the morning, however, they found only Valthrun, who informed them
that Drugo had been taken gravely ill and was unable to join them. He had,
however, some good news for them—Lord Padraig is offering 300 gp for solid
proof that they have defeated this Kobold king. The king is said to
wear a certain talisman at all times; if they return to Winterhaven
with this talisman, they will receive the promised reward.

The party then set out for the Winterbole forest, traveling for a time
along the King's Road. They came at length to the point at which they
must leave the King's Road and seek the Kobolds through
less-established pathways and into the forest itself. As it was nearly
night-fall, they set up camp and set a watch.

Midway through the second watch, the party was attacked by a band of
grey wolves. Wth little difficulty and only minor injuries, they
dispatched the beasts, and completed their night's rest (500 XP).

The following day they encountered a sludge pit trap (100 XP), which
they avoided, and were attacked by a band of dire rats and fire
beetles. Though Wisseau suffered two rat bites, he avoided being
struck by the dread Filth Fever, and the party was victorious over the
vermin (500 XP).

As we left our party, they were preparing to continue their journey in
search of the Kobold raiders.

Loot:
None. Wolves, rats, and beetles don't carry much, alas

XP:
Orfetus, Falcor, Wisseau, and Flynn Rathbone each gained 275 XP

Session 2 3/10/2010

The rescued Halfling, Rendil, thanked the party for interceding and offered them free lodging for as long as they remain in the Seven Pillared Hall. He also volunteered to guide them back through the labyrinth from where they were. Once back in the hall it was easy to find their companions and reunite at the Halfmoon Inn. By lucky chance, another adventurer was staying there and also had a bone to pick with the slavers. The new friend, Bronx, joined up almost immediately. It was decided that the party would rest and make their way into the labyrinth to the headquarters of the Bloodreavers. Rendil offered to lead them as far as the entrance to the Chamber of Eyes.

Bronx was impatient for a fight and decided to go find Brugg, the enforcer of the hall. His job was to ensure that the Mages of Saruun get their cut of all trade in the hall. Is is unpopular due to his heavy handed tactics and heavy thumb on the scales. The fight got ugly fast and Bronx killed Brugg with help from Warren and X'abra (350 xp). As the others rushed toward the sounds of fighting they spotted a tall figure in dark robes and a gold mask teleport out of the statue in the middle of the hall and walk briskly to the taproom.

He was angered by the violence but intrigued by Brox's offer to serve as the new enforcer. His counter offer was continued life in exchange for reconnaissance on one of the Mages of Saruun, Paldemar. Bronx turned him down and was teleported to a room off the hall full of poison gas. Opening the door he triggered a fire trap which nearly killed him (75 xp). The Ordinator Arcanis was very clear that he was not to be trifled with. The remaining party members were informed that they now had the job, whether they liked it or not.

The next morning Rendil led the party to the entrance of the Chamber of Eyes, as promised. From there most of the party snuck in via a balcony while Lucius and Cwthwn knocked on the front door. The guards, four goblins and a bugbear put up a bit of a fight and made a lot of racket. Nevertheless the party prevailed and put them down (800 xp).

bugbear's Belt of Sacrifice
